k-ID launches AgeKit: A universal age API solving age gate complexity for developers
Singapore, 7 October: k-ID is announcing the launch of AgeKit, a universal age API that solves the complex challenge of building, maintaining, and updating compliant and effective age gates across global markets.
For millions of apps, games, websites, and services, there is significant and potentially prohibitive cost to kids’ compliance - along with the hundreds of hours of work required to adapt their users’ experience to a world of variable age groups with divergent regulatory requirements. k-ID’s AgeKit helps alleviate this burden by providing a simple API that informs online services whether a user is a Digital Minor, Digital Youth, or Digital Adult, anywhere in the world.
The challenge facing developers has grown exponentially: how do you create seamless online experiences globally across an increasingly fractured regulatory landscape? Take the age of digital consent – in 2024 alone, 33 countries either introduced or amended their age of digital consent requirements. In 2025, less than 30% of countries and states use 13-years-old as a threshold. Instead, jurisdictions are diverging in their views, with some pushing it to 15, while others have increased it to 16 or even 18.
For developers, this divergence poses a significant regulatory risk – adapting your experience to provide a different experience for minors, youths, and adults requires you to know how these age groups are defined in each region - and getting it wrong risks regulatory enforcement. That’s where k-ID’s AgeKit comes in.
How AgeKit works
AgeKit is powered by k-ID's Regulatory Hub which tracks legal and regulatory requirements, including digital consent ages across every country and state worldwide. The API is updated monthly as laws and regulations evolve, can sort users into privacy-preserving age categories, and scales to handle billions of calls. By using this API, developers can focus on building the experiences they want, while trusting AgeKit to classify their users, enabling an age-appropriate experience. Developers can learn more about the technical implementation in k-ID's blog post: "How to Build a Global Age Gate."
“The legal and regulatory landscape is changing so rapidly that what worked last year—or even last month—may not be sufficient today," said Kieran Donovan, CEO and Co-Founder of k-ID. "Whereas once companies needed an army of lawyers and engineers to build and monitor a compliant age gate, today's advances in technology mean that is no longer the case. AgeKit supports compliance by providing a universal solution that adapts to regulatory changes around the world. We're taking a problem that costs a quarter of a million dollars to solve and making it accessible to every developer.”
AgeKit is available now as part of k-ID's suite of compliance tools. Developers can access the API documentation and begin implementation immediately.
